An example of the difference between configured, customized and canned it that a customized system is built completely from scratch and may take up to two years till it’s complete. Customized software is extremely expensive and once complete it is very difficult and nearly impossible to update. A canned system which is also known as an “out of the box” system is built once and sold to thousands of different types of industries. This means your business and processes need to be changed to fit the software. Canned systems are not very user friendly and may actually consume employee’s time due to the unnecessary screens and steps that need to be taken to achieve the end goal. Configured systems have the customization perks but take only weeks verses months or years.
