Cloud based ERP management software can be a true improvement over client server based solutions. One of the big improvements that often accompany a cloud based system is access. Many of the ERP management software solutions that are cloud based can be accessed anywhere that the internet is available, which is just about everywhere these days. Many companies do not expose their entire ERP system to the internet but many expose portions of their solution to the web. The most common types of interfaces that are exposed via the internet are CRM applications that manage sales and management utilities that keep your management team informed via the web.
Another time saver for IT departments that move to ERP management software that is cloud based can be that they are extremely easy to deploy. Older client server based solutions were often very difficult to deploy and update. Software that is client server based often needs to be updated at user machines which can be a time consuming endeavor, whereas cloud based solutions can be modified and updated in a central location.
There are two major types of cloud based solutions. COTS (commercial off the shelf) based solutions which are often sold using a; Software as a service model (SAAS). This model is usually a pay as you go type service such as Netsuite offers. The main advantage to these types of systems is that you don’t have a substantial commitment to the vendor and you can be up and running quickly. The other major class of ERP solution is an engineered solution. The main advantage to ERP management software that is engineered is that these systems allow their users to innovate and take advantage of business opportunities that their competitors might not be able to.
